Edward Spencer Mott

1844–1910

Wrote about drinking, past and present, in turn-of-the-20th-Century London

Educated at Eton and Sandhurst, Edward Spencer Mott led a peripatetic life until 1877, when he began working for the Sporting Times. Spencer Mott maintained a pseudonym Nathaniel Gubbins at the newspaper, while he wrote various memoires under the Edward Spencer name. His “Cakes & Ale” (1897) and “The Flowing Bowl” (1899) are notable books of the era that concern English drink.
