Portrait from “Lexikon der Getränk”, 1913

Hans Schönfeld

c. 1875–????

Co-wrote the primary document of pre-war German mixology

Little is yet known about Herr Schönfeld, but he appears to be the co-founder of the Internationalen Barkeepers-Union (1909) and co-author of one of the first German bar books, “Lexikon der Getränk” (1913), and certainly the most extensive. Whatever effect his work had in its day appears to have been erased by World War I and subsequent traumas. Today, this document has been a valuable source of corroboration for the state of mixed drinks in Europe circa 1910.
