Louis Muckensturm

1877–1918

Wrote a distinctive cocktail book that included the first Dry Martini recipe (by that name) in the USA

Louis Muckensturm was born in Alsace, emigrated young to the United States, and was working in New York by 1891. By 1897, he’d moved to Boston, to work at the Hotel Marliave, and nearby, he opened his own (short-lived) Café Louis in 1908. Two years before Café Louis, Muckensturm wrote a pair of elegant, locally-published books: “Louis’ Mixed Drinks” and “Louis’ Salads and Chafing Dishes”. The former includes the first Dry Martini recipe in an American recipe book.
