Portrait from “The Hoffman House Bartender’s Guide”

Charles Mahoney

1860–1923

Managed the most fashionable early 20th Century New York bar and wrote the second book about managing a cocktail program

Not much is known about Charles Mahoney, except that at some point he became (and remained) head bartender at the fashionable Hoffman House in Madison Square. Over several years, Mahoney issued several editions of “The Hoffman House Bartender’s Guide”, much of which was given over to essays on bar management. The back of the book also contained a large selection of drinks ostensibly popular at the Hoffman House.
