Portrait from “The Mixicologist”, 1895

C. F. Lawlor

c. 1860–1901

Left a time capsule-like bar book from a smaller American city

Christopher Lawlor was the most famous bartender in Cincinnati in the 1890s, which is to say pretty much unknown anywhere else. However, he did produce a uniquely-named book on mixed drinks—“The Mixicologist” (1895)—which serves as a time capsule of its place and time. The text of the book holds more confirmations than surprises, but the advertising that underwrote the printing costs is local, extensive, and visually rich. Lawlor is buried in Saint Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati.
